There’s a special kind of magic around Ludlow at Christmas time. Simple pleasures matter just as much as the big events. It is a place where you can take your time, enjoy the moment and truly embrace the spirit of slow living.

The town seems to glow a little brighter at this time of year, rural traditions still hold strong and there’s gentle sense of anticipation as locals and visitors settle into the winter season. Festive windows, hot chocolate, mulled wine, Christmas carols, wrapping up in scarves and gloves for winter walks, homemade wreaths, seasonal food, Christmas markets and of course, the Christmas panto, you’ll find it all here.

Whether you live nearby or are planning a seasonal visit, here’s our guide to what’s on and how to make the most of the festivities.

Winter Festival highlights

The Ludlow Winter Festival kicks of the season and runs from 28th to 30th November bringing three days of entertainment and community events in and around town. There will be street food, craft activities, late night shopping and the much loved tractor run from Orleton Young Farmers. There’s a Christmas Tree Trail, Santa’s Grotto and of course, our annual Christmas Light switch-on with a guest appearance from champion Red Rose, Lark Atkin-Davies.  It’s a great way to get into the Christmas spirit with friends and family and enjoy the cheerful atmosphere all around town.

Ludlow Castle also forms part of the festival with a Christmas Tree Trail and St Laurences’ Church will be hosting a family friendly Pizza Night as well as a Winter Bazaar and Craft Fair.

Ludlow Assembly Rooms will putting on the Noel Artisan Market on 22 November, a great opportunity to browse handmade goods, talk to local makers and pick up thoughtful gifts.

Food, creativity and local makers

For those who enjoy a hands on festive treat, The Clive Arms is offering its Festive Roast and Bauble Painting evening on 27 November where guests can enjoy a traditional roast followed by guided bauble painting. Nearby at Ludlow Farmshop the Festive Supplier Tastings on 13 and 14 December showcase artisan producers from across the region with a chance to meet makers and try everything from cheeses and pies to spirits and handmade chocolates. Both venues celebrate local food and craft and make relaxed outings during the build up to Christmas.

Ludlow Christmas Market on 30th November offers artisan stalls and delicious seasonal treats for all ages and every Tuesday in December in the run-up to Christmas, the Tinsel Tuesday Market offers seasonal stall with unique gifts, handcrafted treasures and delicious winter warmers from local traders.

Family fun in town

Families visiting Ludlow will find plenty to enjoy.

At Ludlow Castle the Meet Father Christmas experience offers children the chance to step inside a festive grotto in the castle grounds for a warm and gentle meeting with Father Christmas. Running from 6th to 23rd Dec, 2025, 10.00am to 3.50pm each day this is always very popular so make sure you book early. Santa will also be at his magical Christmas grotto at Ludlow Farmshop where children will then be invited up to tell Santa what they would like for Christmas with mince pies for parents too. Again, book early as this often sells out very quickly.

Over at Ludlow Assembly Rooms the Christmas pantomime comes to live with this year’s Aladdin from the brilliant Ludwig Theatre Arts, bringing the usual mix of laughter, colour and audience fun.

Slow moments and winter walks

There is a particular pleasure in exploring Ludlow on winter evenings when the streets quieten, the windows glow and you can dip into a cosy pub for warmth and good company.

Amble around Ludlows independent shop and experience a more personal and thoughtful way of shopping. Many of our shops are happy to take the hassle out of all that decision making, offering advice, Christmas gift guides and even gift wrapping.

St Laurence’s Church plays an important part at Christmas time with a series of seasonal gatherings including Christmas by Candlelight on 12 December and Carols in the Castle on 22 December. Standing inside this beautiful building on a winter afternoon, listening to warm voices rise into the rafters under the ethereal glow of the renowned stained glass windows is one of the strongest Ludlow memories. It is a thoughtful, atmospheric and lovely reminder of the importance of community and connection at the heart of the season.

Town and country accommodation around Ludlow makes it easy to start the day slowly with local produce for breakfast and no rush to be anywhere too fast.  Alongside all the events, shopping and feasting, we always recommend taking time to enjoy the quieter side of Ludlow. Ludlow has fresh air and scenic views in abundance. Walk along the River Teme or climb up to Whitcliffe for wide winter views. Take a gentle circular path around the green spaces of town, plan a Mortimer forest walk, a Clee Hill hill hike or a countryside wander across a vast network of footpaths.

Christmas in Ludlow offers a balance of lively events and peaceful pleasures, it’s about warmth, connection and time well spent. It invites you to wander, taste, listen and breathe.
