You cannot explore the picturesque river Teme in Ludlow from a better position than the newly refurbished Dinham Weir House. This elegant self-catering retreat set on the river is nestled just below the castle walls and is filled with utterly charming touches and quirky Enid Blyton memorabilia.
Although it houses up to 12 guests, it feels utterly spacious at 5,000 square feet with roomy en-suite bedrooms and snugs to loaf around in. On the upper floor, there is a master bedroom that opens onto a deck overlooking the river a perfect idyll for breakfast or sun downers.
The Place for: large parties and family get togethers obvs with enough nooks and crannies to hide out when necessary, but a large inviting dining room and den area also encourages family or group huddles! If you’re a MasterChef pretender, then the large modern, well equipped kitchen will be a draw; however, if your skills don’t lie in that direction thankfully the Green Cafe and CSons is literally on the door step.
Ideal because: Location, location, location. It’s the perfect base to get somewhere: be it on the river for a bit of canoeing, fishing or a wild swim. It’s an easy walk to explore the town or do the trendy ‘forest bathing’ in hilly Mortimer Forest. There is much to do outdoors perhaps mountain biking and hiking or take it easy and go for strolls in town and look at art galleries, browse bookshops or take a load off in one of the many pubs.
Style steals: Everything! But the showstoppers are the antique Enid Blyton/Eileen Soper educational plates hanging throughout and which inspired the decor. You’ll also want similar wall signs in your own home.
Escape factor: 3 out of 3. The design team behind Redford Barns have turned the former Michelin-starred restaurant Underhill’s into a superb country escape that takes full advantage of its location. It not only reflects the tranquillity of the river, but also manages to recreate a home away from home. The layout too means there is a seamless blend between each room in colour and palette helping Dinham Weir house to feel warm and inviting yet uber cool and eclectic.
