Having been a boxing instructor for over 20 years, I have seen a steady rise in the number of females taking up the sport as both a fantastic full body workout or as a more competitive activity, so much so that it is now one of the fastest growing leisure pursuits for women of all ages. This has led to a growth in specialist boxing gyms alongside the more traditional boxing clubs.
The old image of a boxing club is probably one of spit and sawdust with men fighting in boxing ring. There are still these clubs around but there are a lot more that actively encourage females to join. It is now more common to see both males and females sparring in the ring and using pads and punchbags.
My female clients often say they are put off because they expect they’ll have to spar in the ring. But they don’t have to. There are some fantastic female boxers (take a look at the Katie Taylor documentary on Netflix) but the majority of female clients just want to get boxing fit — boxers are some of the fittest athletes in sports — while learning a new skill at the same time.
At PULSE, I run 1-2-1 or small group boxing classes in a private gym environment with all equipment provided.
A typical boxing session lasts 1 hour and during this time you will learn: the basics of how to punch, use the correct footwork and how to put combinations together to hit pads and punchbags alongside conditioning workouts to get you boxing fit.
