The Ludlow Fringe is celebrating its 10th anniversary and kicking off its month-long programme of events by bringing back Carnival! But, it’s a carnival with a twist – celebrating ‘Our Beautiful Earth’.

The Eco Carnival is a people and pedal-powered parade and take place on Saturday 18 June, 2022. Reject fossil fuels, and instead, you could push a trolley, pull a buggy, ride a tandem, dance your way through the town, or even hop on a horse? So many alternatives.

The Eco Carnival is the definition of a community arts project. It will deliver creative workshops to schools, libraries, sports clubs, retirement homes, and more, where people can learn new skills, meet new friends, and work together on something big, bold, and spectacular. Festival organiser, Jess Laurie, shares the latest exciting news and updates below.

We need YOU!

A planned procession shows off everyone’s creative flair for floats and costumes. The competition categories, which will be judged by a panel including ‘Queen Victoria’ (you’ll see!), are:

  • individual costume
  • group float
  • decorated pram
  • business
  • best dancing

The list of organisations joining the procession is growing, and we’re so grateful for the enthusiasm! The Eco Carnival team have put a lot of time and energy into organising a successful carnival and needs your support to pull it off. So, if any volunteers want to get involved in making marvellous creations, a heron and a kingfisher is awaiting their final feathers! Email Jess (jess@ludlowfringe.co.uk) if you fancy a hot glue gun session.

Kids’ workshop and Volunteers required

Many events are happening, and we need volunteers to help out. Just rally your friends – it will be a laugh! Here are a few:

Saturday 11th June

  • Our final children’s workshop is on at The Scout Hut. We will be making ‘Junk Instruments’ from rubbish and decorating them ready to shake and strum on carnival day. Flag making will be happening too! This is a STAY and PLAY session. Please bring a drink for your child and book by emailing Jess.
  • We also plan to take our BIG puppets down to the Ludlow Brewery, too, and we would LOVE some help with final fixes and practice carrying them. We will need volunteers to help on the day and rally your friends.

Wednesday 15th June

  • Guerilla Shop window painting! Join us from 6 pm as we decorate a ‘Beautiful Earth’ trail of windows through the town in readiness for Eco Carnival weekend. In collaboration with the Ludlow Chamber of Trade and Commerce, it will be a fun opportunity to get creative out on the streets of our special town. Each window will feature a Rousseau inspired vine, an insect and a Pledge for the Planet. NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY, but a steady hand is helpful!
  • There is still room for musicians or groups who would like to join the procession and anyone keen to help carry or support or steward.

Finally, GET YOUR PLEDGES IN. Please state ‘what your organisation will do for ‘Our Beautiful Earth”. If you don’t have some lined up, here are some suggestions from Ludlow 21:

We (name of the business) pledge to (choose 1)

  1. To go plastic-free
  2. To recycle all my business waste
  3. To use refillable containers for hand wash and any cleaning products
  4. To set up a composting system for food leftovers from the kitchen.
  5. Always switch off lights, electrical equipment and standbys
  6. To swap all bulbs to LED
  7. To do business with other local businesses, keep our pound in Ludlow!
  8. To encourage walking and cycling to work or parking out of town and walking in
  9. To provide reusable shopping bags for customers
  10. To change your energy supplier to renewable power sources.

Hope to see you soon.
