It’s that time when kids (maybe parents, too) need their spine-tingling, supernatural thrills! Here are seven of the best delights for families to have a spooky half term and Halloween or near enough…

Pumpkin Fest

Date: Saturday, 15 October 2022
Venue: Woodstock Lane End, Brimfield, SY8 4NU
Spooky rating: 🎃 (it’s a fun family event)

This family-fun event, run by the Humble-Bee Gardeners, will hit the right note with the little ones at the Pumpkin Fest in Brimfield, a short distance from Ludlow. The Pick Your Own Pumpkin Field has varieties for ornamental displays, cooking and Halloween carving. To celebrate local produce, CSons hosts a special BBQ Event, as well as several other local producers such as Matty The French Baker, Laura’s Ice Creams, Just Jerseys delicious milkshakes, autumnal wreaths from Ivy & Oaks and more…   

It will be full of fun for the family with pumpkin-themed games. Do check your gardens for any needed last minute additions as there are of course plant sales, all at 20% off.

Free entry, runs from 11am-4pm.

Halloween sugar cookies

Halloween Sugar Cookie Decorating Class – Beginner

Date: Saturday, 22 October
Venue: Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre, SY7 9RS
Spooky rating: 🎃 (the scariest moment might just be sharing your works of art with the rest of the room!)

This class is for the beginner cookie maker or the person curious about what cookie decorating is all about. It’s a fun Halloween-themed set that tastes amazing and will look even better once you’ve finished decorating.

Completely Cookied host provides everything you will need, from cookies, icing, sprinkles, and a box to take your fabulous creations home.

Twisted Tales for Halloween

Date: Monday, 24 October
Venue: Blue Boar, Ludlow
Spooky rating: 🎃 🎃 🎃 (minimum age is 12+)
 
Dark and darkly comic stories and live music for adults and teens.
 
Sibling tale weavers Jason and Rosalind Buck serve another horrifying dollop of live entertainment for the spooky season. Performance storytelling at its best; there will be live music to whirl the witches and spin the spirits at this evening of horror and comedy. There is also a special guest appearance by irreverent elderly hedge witch Grannie Garstleigh.
 
All of this is in the cosy setting of the reading room above the Blue Boar. So keep you head on and enjoy a drink with first-class entertainment. Book soon!

Half-Term Halloween Holiday Club

Date: Tuesday, 25th & Thursday, 27th October
Venue: Oaker Wood Leisure HR6 9PT
Spooky Rating: 🎃🎃  (we reckon there’ll be some high adrenalin adventures on this one)

Each day is different at Oaker Wood Holiday Club, and children (available for ages 7-12 and 11-16) participate in various activities. In groups of 10-12, they experience High Ropes challenges, including the 100m Zip Wire, Gladiator Climbing Challenge & Monkey Climbing, and the Low Ropes Assault Course, Wild Camp, Outdoor Pizza Making, Den Building, Target Shooting and Woodland Games.

Halloween Scavenger Hunt

Date: Thursday, 27 October 2022
Venue: Acton Scott Hall, SY6 6QQ
Spooky rating: 🎃 (suitable for children aged between 3yrs and 10yrs)

Follow the hidden trail around the grounds of Acton Scott Hall. Along the way, learn some weird facts about nature, search for hidden creatures and collect items for crafting. At the end of the trail, there are refreshments to enjoy. And you can also have a go at the games and activities on the lawn.

Join the walking dead this Halloween and don’t get lost!

Walk into the dead of night to be entertained by Ludlow’s most nefarious characters.
 
Relive the terrifying ordeals of Shropshire’s medieval market town and experience the exploits of Ludlow’s darker history.
 
Meet Dr Altas and his associates at the Buttercross outside The Church Inn, central Ludlow on the bells at 8 pm or you’ll be left behind. Remember to book.

Halloween Ghost Walk

Date: Saturday, 29 October 2022
Venue: Acton Scott Hall, SY6 6QQ
Spooky rating: 🎃🎃 (suitable for adults and children over 10yrs)
 
Join a mystery tour on the private grounds of Acton Scott Hall, sharing tales of folklore, ghosts, fairies and creatures of the night. Follow your cloaked, lantern-bearing guide through woodland paths, secret gardens and an ancient tree arch, ending the tour with some warming refreshments.

Halloween in the Gardens of Stokesay Court

Date: Sunday, 30 October 2022
Venue: Stokesay Court Gardens, SY7 9BD
Spooky rating: 🎃 (a great family afternoon)

Garden Entry, with Tasty Treats including warming soup, burgers, hotdogs, indulgent hot chocolate and homemade brownies for sale from our Shepherd’s Hut. Put on your wellies and warm clothes and go for a good walk around the grounds to clear the cobwebs.

Feel free to arrive in fancy dress if you like – there will be prizes – and seek out the pumpkins on the trail for a bit of fun and a goody bag. The house and garden will be lit at dusk to complete the Halloween feel.
