Moray and Darren Hayman set up Shropshire Hills Glamping in the summer of 2017 after moving to South Shropshire from a hop across the bridge in Knighton Powys.
It had always been a passion of Moray’s to own her own business and a reluctant Darren went along with the plan as long as it didn’t cost too much money.
The idea for Shropshire Hills Glamping was born over dinner one night with their two children. They thought to open up their beautiful home in the Shropshire Hills to others, wanting to enjoy nature in a more comfortable, easy, and enjoyable environment.
They also loved the idea of guests coming to disconnect from the modern world and thought to offer an alternative to conventional camping with the off-grid experience of glamping. With their superb Shropshire Hills location and endless opportunities for natural adventures, they were confident they could provide an experience to remember.
Guests arrive to a bespoke handmade 45ft Hay Bale Lorry Trailer built uniquely into a Hilltop Cabin with wood burning stove and firewood. There are two double beds and two single beds dressed in fresh cotton linen. There is also an outside eco-shower block with instant hot water. Pets are also welcomed.
The couple were to have their first ‘open all year round’ season in 2020. Shropshire Hills Glamping was set to have its best year yet and was booked until late October 2020.
However, the pandemic hit in mid March and the couple closed down for the safety of their guests and themselves. It has remained closed since then, a painful and heartbreaking process having to cancel all of their guests over the past ten weeks. As a small, family-run business receiving no income has also been a tough battle.
Raffle for hope and change
The couple have been trying to think of ways to keep the business through the pandemic without going under. Moray came up with the idea of raffling off the beautiful family car. It was one way to do something unique and bring some positivity to an awful year, while hopefully changing someone else’s life. It also had the advantage of raising the profile of their business.
