Ludlow Castle’s Round Chapel is a fantastic structure and a new roof ensures it will be around for generations to enjoy. Plus, it will offer more experiences including as a wedding venue. It’s been three years of work from start to finish with experts from Historic England.

Though no existing drawings or photos exist, architect Mike Garner from Garner Southall in Llandrindod Wells was able to research roof structures from that period. The result is a roof constructed in oak using traditional methods and techniques, carried out by Shropshire-based building conservation specialist, Phillips & Curry.
The roof was built off-site and brought to the Castle in kit form for fabrication once crenellations on the Chapel were rebuilt. Stone and mortar was chosen to match a panel of post-16th Century blocking on the Chapel so as to distinguish later work from original.
The work was essential to protect the fabric of the Chapel and increase its longevity for future generations to enjoy. It will also provide an all-weather wedding venue.
Sonja Belchere, The Custodian of Ludlow Castle, has been working closely with The Mortimer History Society on a number of projects that also involve an interpretation of the Chapel with it’s timber chancel — only visible from the outlines on the walls.
